Sketch plan and facade study for a residential project.

A competition entry for a small courtyard house of only 45m², combining traditional and modern elements. A central design consideration was to how to create a well-defined outdoor area that is in itself a ‘positive space’ well integrated with the house and extending the sense of the interior out to the garden walls. In a house this small, areas of privacy are essential, so the contemporary open plan was rejected in favour of clearly separated spaces.

A project for a new three bedroom Federation bungalow in Sydney's Inner West. The plan features a wide central hall and courtyard garden for good cross-ventilation, front and rear verandahs, a separate dining space, and ample storage. The facade is carefully detailed, with exposed ‘rafters’, a shingled gable and oriel window with shingled ‘skirt’.

A ‘primitive’ off-grid house modeled on the Japanese hito-ma farmhouse plan: a single raised living/sleeping space with a central charcoal irori (sunken hearth), adjoining a lower kitchen/working area. The structure is hybrid steel + timber portal frames. Large sliding windows allow the building to be fully opened up, and deep eaves protect the interior from summer sun and driving rain. The building has no services other than a single cold water to the kitchen and low-voltage solar electricity; bath and toilet are in outbuildings.

This simple plan consists of a central living area surrounded by kitchen, dining nook, bed alcove, and bathroom, and strikes a balance between openness and the need for privacy. The steeply raked ceiling gives the interior a a sense of space, while also providing room above the ceilings at each end for attic storage or a sleeping loft.

Competition entry. The brief (from a glass manufacturer) called for innovative use of glass in a forest pavilion. The design features operable roof louvres over a hybrid timber-glass truss structure, and a ‘cooling wall' of drip-fed glass bowls in the west facade.
